This is Mike Lubelfeld, superintendent of schools, North Shore school district 112. It’s 3:00 pm Central Time on August 4th. I am sharing an audio update to let you know that Governor JB Pritzker of Illinois announced an executive order today that requires masks be worn indoors by all teachers, staff, students, and visitors to K-12 schools, regardless of vaccination status. In this podcast, I’m going to share excerpts from the governor’s speech, and also share additional information, as well as a preview of what will be released next week in our community with respect to the reopening of schools in person full time scheduled for August 18th, 2021. – Effective immediately. All P12 schools and daycares in Illinois must follow the CDC guidance of universal masking inside regardless of vaccine status. My goal has always been to safely bring all kids back into the classroom at the start of the school year, and crucially to keep them there. Without these measures, we would likely see many more outbreaks than in the latter half of the last school year. Preventing outbreaks from the start also prevents kids from having to stay home because they’re sick, or in quarantine. This requirement extends to P12 sports. Face coverings will be required for all indoor recreation. Whereas outdoor, where transmission risks and rates are lower, athletes and coaches will not be required to mask. We will continue to encourage school districts to make sure their athletes are tested regularly to catch any potential outbreaks early. And to ensure that schools have what they need to adhere to the new mask requirement, my administration is ready to supply mask to any school districts that need them. That’s on top of the free COVID-19 testing supplies we’re providing to all of our public schools statewide. Throughout this pandemic, we’ve shifted public health protocols as circumstances have changed, and will continue to do so.

– The Illinois governor, the CDC, the Illinois Department of Public Health, and the Illinois state board of education wanna remind everybody, all of our listeners, and everybody in the public, vaccination remains the best protection against further spread of COVID-19. Vaccination is effective in preventing severe illness, hospitalization, and death, and it has proven to be effective against the delta variant.

– We now have an extremely effective tool to save lives and keep our hospital systems from being overwhelmed with COVID-19 patients. It will allow us to support kids full return to in-person learning. It will keep businesses open, and it’s easy to get, it’s the vaccine.

– Now, on August 3rd, which was yesterday, I announced that effective immediately, all adults on campus were strongly urged to wear face coverings until further notice. Well, now it’s August 4th, literally within 24 hours of that notice, and the governor of Illinois has just mandated this. So obviously, we’re going to be updating our practices. Because now it is a mandate. As has been our reality since March 12th, 2020, information comes in fast. There are certain changes. There are certain levels of agreement or lack thereof. And this public health crisis has certainly challenged all of us in society, not just here in district 112, and Highland Park High would in Fort Sheridan in Illinois and the nation and the world. And it’s going to build our resilience, and hopefully our care and compassion for one another. And ideally as we move forward, we move forward focusing on things we can control, which is our reaction to news. Focusing on things we can’t control, which is building the absolute best silver linings out of these situations, and ultimately protecting the general welfare and health and safety of the public while ethically and legally and morally adhering to and following mandates and guidance from the state governor’s office.
