“We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.”
– Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The journey outside of my comfort zone has begun. With some amazing new friends who I met today, we are about to embark on a mission of learning, service, and storytelling. From our lives in the United States, Canada and Brazil, from our professional lives as superintendents, principals, teachers, school board members, PTA executives, photographers, executives, etc. to a community of learners, servers, and storytellers in a foreign land – the adventure started today.
We all gathered for community building, orientation, and to ensure we would all head to the Dominican Republic together, we started bonds of community and friendship. Right now the reality of the upcoming adventure is becoming clearer. I’m really starting to visualize the people with whom I’m about to share this mission trip. I’m beginning to understand that no matter how “connected” I may be to the “Internet” … For the next few days my world may be “unconnected” from what is known as I connect with different inputs.

We are about to learn alongside wonderful new people in a different part of the world. I have so much to learn from them. While we will continue to build a K-8 school for the community in Rio Grande, I aim to learn how this school serves the community. How will this school help the folks in the community reach their goals and dreams? I plan to listen and learn.
I am eager to learn the stories and lives and lifestyles of those who live in the Rio Grande area. I am eager to learn why there is a saying in the Dominican Republic: “God is everywhere, but he lives in Contanza” (the area we are going to serve). As we prepare to leave our routines, our culture, our community, I am excited and nervous about the opportunities for me and the other volunteers to become better people from learning and serving.
I hope to become a better leader, person, father, husband, friend, etc. after having this amazing opportunity. I’m grateful to LifeTouch and I am honored to represent the American Association of School Administrators.
